In October 1973, a PSC team from UNICEF EARO in Nairobi visited Lesotho to show the film "To Build a Healthy Nation" to the government, for the purpose of getting it approved and if so translated into the local langauge and adapted to local conditions. The paper describes the materials considered for the proposed campaign.

It illustrates misunderstandings between the Bemba and the Ngoni, and tensions between the Town Clerk and the Mayor, and suspicions of local peoples of a proposed development project in their area.

Discusses the role of music and songs in influencing people, for instance regarding nutrition.
Includes texts of songs commissioned by the UNICEF PSC unit in Eastern Africa 1972-1973. Songs are in Kiswahili original with English translations by Joan Bel Geddes, Mbarak Mwinshehe, Greg Lanning, David Rughendo and others. The songs address nutrition, good health and spacing of childbirths.

Workshop exercise using cassette recorder during Part V (Workshop Exercises) of the UNICEF/PSC Workshop on Communication for Social Development, held at the University of Zambia, Lusaka, 29 April to 10 May 1974 Programme communication; Workshop equipment; Training; Communication for development; Communication for social development During Part V, Workshop Exercises, participants had a chance to approach local squatters in a settlement near Lusaka, using a cassette recorder to collect the views of prospective project beneficiaries of what their situation was and how they viewed the proposed project. 08-May-1974 Interview 1 (in Bemba) and 2nd Interview prepared during Part V (Workshop Exercises) of the UNICEF/PSC Workshop on Communication for Social Development. University of Zambia, Lusaka, 29 April to 10 May 1974 Programme communication; Workshop equipment; Training; Communication for development; Communication for social development Two interviews were conducted with local people living at the George Compound on 17 April 1974, as part of the workshop. Interviewers solicited views of local people on their general living situation and how they thought they might benefit from a development project in their area.
The two interviews, reported verbatim, are followed by a summary describing the main attitudes, fears and hopes of the people in George Compound about the Lusaka squatter upgrading project.
